Starting the shikoku pilgrimage in Japan with just a touch of rain. It was a setback but I think it may have helped to get an absolute crap day out of the way in the very beginning. It taught me a few things, including, that I don’t actually have to be here. Day 3 today was beautiful and I want to be here thankfully. Distance walked so far (according to phone): 46 km Distance from Temple 1 (according to google map): 36.8 km Apologies if the edit is funky or worse than even my low standards, traveling light and editing solely in my phone.
An amazing experience walking 1200 km along the 88 temple pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan. I walked this pilgrimage fundraising for a charity close to my heart who facilitate free mental health programs to youth struggling. We raised $2213.37 for Heal.ed Tribe in the Gold Coast to support young people! I am an adventure seeker and a changemaker so I will continue to go on adventures. Because of the overwhelming attention my pilgrimage videos received on Instagram (60,000 new followers!?) I have decided to keep documenting my travels and move them to YouTube. I aim to travel to less known places and interact with the local people. If you like slow travel, come along for the ride! (...bring snacks!) 💛 In this video you are going to be pleasantly surprised by many things. Some of them will be: The kindness of the local people The beautiful countryside of Japan How being alone with yourself is incredibly healing 🥾 But… wait! I have many questions about the pilgrimage…. Please write them below but I will try to answer some below. The Shikoku pilgrimage route (or Shikoku Henro) is one of the few circular-shaped pilgrimages in the world. It includes 88 “official” temples and numerous other sacred sites where the Buddhist priest Kūkai (Kōbō Daishi) is believed to have trained or have spent time during the 9th Century. If walked, the entire route is about 1,200 kilometers long. This pilgrimage provides the an opportunity to reflect on one's life and to change for the better. People’s motives for making this pilgrimage are varied. For example, some come for religious reasons, some to pray for healing or safety in the home, or some in memory of those who have passed away. In addition, some come just to get away from regular life, some for recreation, or some to spend time alone in reflection and to find oneself. For people today, it is being re-discovered as a healing journey. This pilgrimage should not be considered as a stamp-gathering relay, but as a religious journey. The local people will welcome you for your decision to embark on the Shikoku pilgrimage. ●Walking: This will take about 6 weeks (average 30km/day) and cost about 400,000 yen. This is the most traditional way, but it takes the most time and money. ●Charted bus: This will take 9-12 days and cost about 250,000 yen. There is a variety of bus plans provided by travel and bus companies and in each case an official guide (sendatsu) will accompany the group. At present, there are no bus tours available in foreign languages. If a foreign visitor would like to participate in a bus tour then sufficient Japanese ability is required. ●Car: This will take about 10 days and cost about 140,000 yen. You can rent a car from the closest train station or airport, but make sure that you are familiar with the rules of the road. Follow along as I complete the 88 temples pilgrimage in Shikoku, Japan. As I walk I will tell you everything you need to know to successfully complete the pilgrimage yourself. GPS ROUTES MAP I have created a map of most of the official routes to the 88 temples. The routes are colour coded to show you quiet roads, busy roads, easy trails, moderate trails and hard trails. I have added waypoints for temples, campgrounds, points of interest, rest areas, toilets, convenience stores, and more. This map uses the Gaia GPS trail map application which uses your phone GPS to show where you are in real time. The Shikoku Pilgrimage (Shikoku Henro) or Shikoku Junrei is a multi-site pilgrimage of 88 temples associated with the Buddhist monk Kukai (Kobo Daishi) on the island of Shikoku, Japan. A popular and distinctive feature of the island's cultural landscape, and with a long history, large numbers of pilgrims (known as henro) still undertake the journey for a variety of ascetic, pious, and tourism-related purposes. In addition to the 88 "official" temples of the pilgrimage, there are over 200 bangai — temples not considered part of the official 88. To complete the pilgrimage, it is not necessary to visit the temples in order; in some cases it is even considered lucky[citation needed] to travel in reverse order. The pilgrimage is traditionally completed on foot, but modern pilgrims use cars, taxis, buses, bicycles, or motorcycles. The walking course is approximately 1,200 km long and can take anywhere from 30 to 60 days to complete. "henro" is the Japanese word for pilgrim, and the inhabitants of Shikoku call the pilgrims O-henro-san , the "O" being an honorific and the "san" a title similar to "Mr." or "Mrs.". They are often recognizable by their white clothing, sedge hats, and kongo-tsue or walking sticks. Alms or osettai are frequently given. Many pilgrims begin and complete the journey by visiting Mount Kōya in Wakayama Prefecture, which was settled by Kukai and remains the headquarters of the Shingon sect of Buddhism. The 21 km walking trail up to Koya-san still exists, but most pilgrims use the train. Attesting to the popularity of the Shikoku pilgrimage, from the eighteenth century a number of smaller imitative versions have been established. These include a 150km circuit on the island of Shodoshima, northeast of Takamatsu, a 3km course on the grounds of Ninna-ji in Kyoto, a route on the Chita Peninsula near Nagoya, and circuits in Edo and Chiba Prefecture.

My name is Sabrina Anjali and I created this short film documentary about the shikoku pilgrimage. I moved to Japan one year before the global pandemic in wish to pursue my career in the arts. As a film maker, photographer, illustrator my interests always come back to embracing my Asian heritage. I hope that by following me along my journey as a creator you can be inspired to fulfil your own purpose too. The documentary consists of three parts about the Shikoku Pilgrimage on the island of Shikoku. Since moving to Japan in 2019, I have been fascinated as to why people of all ages, and from different walks of life come to do this pilgrimage. Through the three chapters, Perseverance, Surrender and Ease. I investigate the origins, of the pilgrimage and the connections to Buddhism. The reasons for starting the mentality and reflections upon a journey. The three chapters are named, Perseverance Surrender and Ease. Before moving to Japan, I was not aware of this pilgrimage or the reasoning behind it. After learning more I wished to create a film to share this hidden beauty with the rest of the world. I hope that this film inspires travellers to come to the island of Shikoku and experience a new Japan that is enriched in culture, humanity and kindness. Temples 61 through to 66 visited today, including the biggest remaining climbs of this pilgrimage. Yet what was harder than the climbing was getting into the groove in the morning. Cold, irritated, and not "in the zone", Mighty learns a good lesson about managing the difficult times in a journey (and, by extension, in life more general!) 四国遍路 Shikoku Henro PART ONE 発心 Awakening is the first episode of a 4 part documentary about the island of shikoku and its 88 temple pilgrimage. I began my journey in october 2018 and it took 50 days to complete the 1250 km long pilgrimage from temple 1 back to temple 1. The information provided in this video might be outdated by the time you watch it. The route i follow is most of the time the official signposted route but i would walk detours from time to time to experience some more of the shikoku lifestyle. There is an accomodation in its pricinct. and there is a Ohenro shop next to it so you can spare the lack of items here.

Started the day going up a road meant only for cars because I couldn’t find the ohenro path. There weren’t many cars on the road so it worked out ok. It was just as well since the road pointed out a famous battle site from The Tales of Heike. Visited three temples today, T84, T85, and T86, that were rather close together, so it was a rather light walking day. I could linger at breaks and at temples and the temples were ones worth lingering at. Had a great conversation with a woman from France who was also a filmmaker who was planning on walking the pilgrimage and filming it as well. She made a documentary on her Santiago de Camino pilgrimage. It was a day full of Japanese history. The day ended with me meeting a gentlemam that I have been crossing paths with for about a week. We had a great long talk with another pilgrim for about 2 hours over dinner.
