Visit 🤍 for a 100$ credit on your new Linode account! Today, we're going to talk about which distributions someone currently using Windows could move to. They're not in any specific order or preference, they all answer to different needs! Become a channel member to get access to a weekly patroncast and vote on the next topics I'll cover: 🤍 Support the channel on Patreon: 🤍 Follow me on Twitter : 🤍 My Gaming on Linux Channel: 🤍 Follow me on ODYSEE: 🤍 Or join ODYSEE: 🤍 Join us on Discord: 🤍 ## THE COMPLETE CLONE In that case, the option for you is WindowsFX. This distribution is based on Ubuntu LTS, virtually the most popular and used Linux version in the world, but you would be hard pressed to differentiate it, at first glance, from actual Windows 10. Everything here is made to be ultra familiar to Windows users, from the desktop layout to the start menu. Now, it's not just a theme here, there are a LOT of things integrated out of the box to make Windows users comfortable: it's preinstalled with Microsoft Edge as a default browser, and the settings application has been completely tweaked to look like Windows 10's settings. Now, WindowsFX uses the KDE Plasma desktop environment as a base, and some settings will reflect that, opening a dedicated window instead of being displayed in the settings app, but that's still pretty impressive. You even have a way to sync with OneDrive, right from the start. You also have onlyoffice preinstalled, as well as shortcuts to Office Online. Basically, the goal here is to have as close a replica of Windows 10 as possible. It also offers the ability to install Wine in one click, which gives you a compatibility layer to run Windows programs on Linux, just by downloading .exe files and running them as you'd expect on Windows. ## LOOK ALIKES In that case, I'd recommend 2 options: The first one is KDE Neon, using the KDE Plasma desktop environment. It's actually close to the windows layout by default, with a bottom bar that serves as your main way to interact with the applications and the system, and a nice start menu equivalent, with search capabilities, access to your files, applications and system controls. The other advantage is that KDE Plasma is really very configurable: if a default behavior doesn't suit you, you will be able to change it, after spending a little time digging in the settings. That's probably what will be the biggest obstacle: learning where to find each setting that you want to change. Neon has its own App Store, called Discover, which is nice enough, to let you install any other software you might want, as the preinstalled selection is pretty small. It also comes with KDE Connect, an equivalent to the 'My Phone" app on Windows. The second option is Linux Mint, with the Cinnamon Desktop. Linux Mint also has a default layout very similar to WIndows, using a bottom bar, and a start menu, and it's also very configurable, so you'll be able to change whatever you want if you don't like how it works. It's also based on Ubuntu LTS, so it's very stable. So, what's the difference with KDE Neon? Well, the Cinnamon Desktop is a bit easier to get to grips than KDE Plasma. The settings might not be as abundant, but they're easier to find, remember and generally, the desktop doesn't feel as intimidating out of the box. Linux mint has various applications preinstalled, including LibreOffice, and it has a good app store to install anything else you might need. It's not updated as often as KDE Neon, waiting for major versions to release bigger feature updates, but it's a really stable and user friendly option. ## WELL DOCUMENTED Ubuntu is one of, if not the most used distro out there, and serves as the base for a lot more distributions, including all the ones I mentioned up to this point. It comes in a lot of variants, so you can pick any desktop layout you want, and it's something that you won't have any trouble finding online help for. If you want the most help available and a simple way to get the system onto your device, then it's Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, any "buntu will do. ## THE HARD WAY In that case, use Arch. Honestly, it's not that tricky to install, it's just a matter of following the wiki, but it's going to teach you a lot about Linux along the way, how it works, what components it uses, and it will let you pick how it looks, and how it will work. It's definitely not something I'd recommend to a newcomer, unless you're planning your move to Linux as a side project, that you're willing to sink time into, learning the ins and outs, and taking whatever time you need.

When I started learning music production in the mid 2000's, the choice was: Windows, or Mac? In intervening 15+ years, support for Linux as a pro-audio OS has got to the point that I don't use anything else Two major improvements have been Hubert Figuière's efforts around Flatpak packaging, and Wim Tayman's work leading Pipewire development. I will highlight those and more creative apps that are available to modern Linux users.

Building Mixed Criticality Linux Systems with the Jailhouse Hypervisor - Ralf Ramsauer

Building Mixed Criticality Linux Systems with the Jailhouse Hypervisor - Ralf Ramsauer, Technical University of Applied Sciences Regensburg & Jan Kiszka, Siemens AG The partitioning hypervisor Jaihouse allows us to run safety critical and uncritical applications in parallel on a single SoC. We present our experiences when porting a safety and real-time critical existing application as a Jailhouse guest. It shows a novel and promising approach for implementing mixed-criticality applications with real-time requirement while not loosing the benefits of Linux. This is done by static partitioning of hardware resources; guests do not interfere. We will present a multicopter platform running the real-time critical flight stack in an isolated Jailhouse guest. This proves the practicability of Jailhouse as well as the suitability for real-time safety critical systems by porting an existing application to a Jailhouse cell. We stress its concept and show up current hardware limitations, like undesired behaviour and present possible workarounds and solutions. About Jan Kiszka Jan Kiszka is working as consultant and senior software engineer in the Competence Center for Embedded Linux at Siemens Corporate Technology. He is supporting Siemens sectors with adapting and enhancing open source as platform for their products. For customer projects and whenever his spare time permits, he is contributing to open source projects, specifically in the area of real-time and virtualization. About Ralf Ramsauer Ralf Ramsauer is a PhD student at the University of Applied Sciences Regensburg where he works in a joint project together with Siemens Corporate Competence Center Embedded Linux. His academic research interests focus on finding successful long term maintenance strategies for Open Source Software in embedded industrial context. This covers the full software stack of embedded systems, from hardware-related low-level virtualisation technologies via kernel-space through to userland.

Support Me on Patreon: 🤍 Connect with Me On Instagram: 🤍 I have a laptop which I bought 12 years ago so it's very low powered by today's standards. But I can easily run Android studio, a browser and an emulator on it, all at the same time, and guess what, the performance is very similar to what you get on a mid-range laptop available in the market today. What my laptop lacks in the hardware department I make up for it by installing ingenious Linux distros that are built for superior performance. These distros breathe new life into older hardware as these operating systems have a reduced overhead, allowing the computer to use more resources in terms of memory and CPU cycles for user tasks, thereby providing visible boost in performance. Today I've picked for you the top 5 best Linux distros that deliver a power packed computing experience along with solid stability great usability and some with downright stunning looks.

NDSS 2020 HFL: Hybrid Fuzzing on the Linux Kernel

06.04.2020

SESSION 1B-2 HFL: Hybrid Fuzzing on the Linux Kernel Hybrid fuzzing, combining symbolic execution and fuzzing, is a promising approach for vulnerability discovery because each approach can complement the other. However, we observe that applying hybrid fuzzing to kernel testing is challenging because the following unique characteristics of the kernel make a naive adoption of hybrid fuzzing inefficient: 1) having many implicit control transfers determined by syscall arguments, 2) controlling and matching internal system state via system calls, and 3) inferring nested argument type for invoking system calls. Failure to handling such challenges will render both fuzzing and symbolic execution inefficient, and thereby, will result in an inefficient hybrid fuzzing. Although these challenges are essential to both fuzzing and symbolic execution, however, to the best of our knowledge, existing kernel testing approaches either naively use each technique separately without handling such challenges or imprecisely handle a part of challenges only by static analysis. To this end, this paper proposes HFL, which not only combines fuzzing with symbolic execution for hybrid fuzzing but also addresses kernel-specific fuzzing challenges via three distinct features: 1) converting implicit control transfers to explicit transfers, 2) inferring system call sequence to build a consistent system state, and 3) identifying nested arguments types of system calls. As a result, HFL found 24 previously unknown vulnerabilities in recent Linux kernels. Additionally, HFL achieves 14% higher code coverage than Syzkaller, and over S2E/TriforceAFL, achieving even eight times better coverage, using the same amount of resource (CPU, time, etc.). Regarding vulnerability discovery performance, HFL found 13 known vulnerabilities more than three times faster than Syzkaller. PAPER 🤍 SLIDES AUTHORS Kyungtae Kim (Purdue University) Dae R.
