However, there are a lot of professional harp players who love this harmonica. Personally, the lack of responsiveness and difficulty bending some of the draw bends makes it hard for me to get excited about, but according to JP Allen these harmonicas shine best when they’re customized by professionals. The stainless steel reeds give this harmonica a beautiful tone that’s much darker to my ear than brass reeds. The stainless steel reeds are less susceptible to corrosion than brass. They make the harmonica more expensive, but they also make it more durable and longer-lasting. In the key of A. The key of A for a "standard" pentatonic harmonica is a little on the low side of the scale compared to say a C or F harp. But the tones of the A harp seem to be really nice and rich. Each of these harps is great in their own right. The Seydel seems a little smoother and easier to keep the same volume throughout playing it. The Special 20 is a bit more wild, but a lot of fun. I seem to be a little more creative with the Special 20 for some reason. But I would use the Seydel to record something because I like the evenness of it.

Stevie Wonder performs an extensive trial of Seydel Harmonicas at the Seydel Booth at NAMM 2012. He was impressed with the tone of the stainless steel reeds. He described them as being "brighter". These reeds have also been described as providing a "stronger" tone and significantly greater durability. The increased longevity offers an economical trade-off to the increased cost of these reeds. Long term users of stainless steel reeds easily justify the greater cost by having reduced need for re-tuning and maintenance, and actual less cost over time compared to brass and bronze reeds.

The best tool to tune a stainless steel reed is a rotary tool with a suited diamont coated grinding tip. Stainless steel is a lot more sturdy than brass so we recommend to use a grinder instead of a file. Please take care to remove material always only from the middle of the reed - produce no scratches crosswise to the direction of the reed! Removing material at the tip end results in raising the pitch whereas removing material at the rivet-end results in a lower pitch. Re-gapping the reed offset will perhaps be required after the tuning procedure. In the video (and in the SEYDEL factory) we use a concert pitch of 443 Hz which results in 441Hz with covers mounted and harder playing pressure. More info about temperaments can be found here: 🤍 The tuning tool in the video is available at 🤍 Instead of a chromatic tuner we used the "Cleartune app" on a mobile phone. - Das beste Werkzeug zum Stimmen von Stimmzungen aus Edelstahl ist ein elektrisches Schleifgerät mit einer diamantierten Schleifspitze in geeigneter Form. Edelstahl ist viel härter als Messing und daher ist ein elektrischer Schleifer viel besser geeignet als eine Stimmfeile. Bitte achten Sie darauf, dass Sie nur Material aus der Mitte der Stimmzunge abtragen: Schleifen am offenen Ende der Zunge erhöht die Tonhöhe, Schleifen am Nietende senkt die Tonhzöhe ab. Achten Sie darauf IMMER in Längsrrichtung zur Stimmzunge zu schleifen, damit sich keine Kratzer quer zur Stimmzunge bilden. Nach dem Schleifen könnte ein erneutes Einstellen des Lösabstands nötig sein. Im Video (und in der Produktion bei SEYDEL) benutzen wir den Kammerton 443 Hz - dieser resultiert mit aufgeschraubten Schalldeckeln und höherem Spieldruck in einer Basis-Frequenz von ca. 441Hz.
